A genuine interest in working with people is essential. Please note that for all care courses involving work experience placement, an offer of a place is subject to a satisfactory check through Disclosure Scotland (Enhanced). All applicants will be invited for a pre-entry guidance and information session. Thereafter, selection will be by individual interview.

  • Description:

This course is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge relevant to employment in the health care environment.

  • Who is the Course for?

This course is designed for people who do not have the formal entry requirements for nurse education. The Access to Nursing Course enables successful students, who meet the required criteria, to gain an entry qualification into the Diploma HE (Nursing) and Bachelor of Nursing programmes: Adult, Children and Mental Health Branches, as well as Midwifery, at Robert Gordon University. RGU will offer places to applicants who have passed the Access course, have a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure Scotland check, satisfactory Occupational Health check, college support and successful interview. Applicants wishing to pursue a career in Children's nursing or Midwifery apply as independent candidates following successful completion of the Access course through the CATCH system i.e. the college does not handle applications to these branches. Whilst places are not guaranteed, Aberdeen College applicants have a very high success rate.  Successful achievement and subsequent certification from the Scottish Qualifications Authority for the course units requires students to gain a pass in all unit assessments.

  • How will I be Assessed?

Assessment for all units is ongoing throughout the course. Course work is assessed in a variety of ways including, projects, short answer questions, essays and some closed book assessments. The emphasis is centred on student centred learning, where students are encouraged and supported to complete independent research. Students are encouraged from an early stage to take responsibility for their own learning and the use of the college's Virtual learning Environment is actively encouraged. A unit overview will be provided by the lecturer at the beginning of each unit including outcome and particular assessment details.
