The course will comprise practical studio and location-based photography modules to be delivered at Aberdeen College, Business Studies modules to be delivered by Aberdeen Business School and theoretical and contextual study modules to be delivered by Gray's School of Art.
The course structure has been developed in response to market research on content and includes key activities in relation to Business Start-Up/ Entrepreneurship and Creative Industries Management including copyright and intellectual property rights.
Practical project work in Semester 1 introduces a 'diagnostic' approach where individuals are facilitated to choose projects related to their identified strengths and interests. These are tested throughout the Semester and will culminate in a reflective / evaluative presentation. Projects will involve live assignments and simulated work related experiences.
In Semester 2, students will build upon this experience and develop personal proposals for self-directed project work. Staff will work with students to facilitate project proposals, links with industry, and to test thinking and creative exploration within the subject nature and context of the project.
Independent study is the main theme during the last semester of the course. The student will be responsible for their own programme of study and will be expected to manage their time and projects effectively in preparation for graduation and entry to their preferred area within the photographic industry.
Throughout the course the student will also undertake a programme of theoretical study that supports the practical and creative aspects of dealing with commercial photography. They will investigate the work of photographers and photographic practice, both historical and contemporary, as well as studying the specific requirements of business planning and consumer behaviour. This programme relates both to the broad theme of the semester and the studio project programme allowing the student to put theory directly into practice.
The students will be fully enrolled in the host institution i.e. RGU. However, they will spend approximately 50% of their time at Aberdeen College. Students will be registered with Aberdeen College and will have equal access to College facilities and support services.
- Career Opportunities:
Graduates from the course will gain the necessary skills to move into self-employed freelance photography. Students will be able to specialise in a number of photographic contexts in readiness for professional practice.
