  • Course Structure:

    Developing a critical understanding as well as core journalistic skills, this course includes the study of news and feature writing and production for a wide variety of media, including newspapers, magazines, radio, tv and the internet. You will develop an impressive portfolio of skills in journalistic writing as well as key transferable skills including communication and IT.

    You will also complete external examinations in shorthand, news writing, law, and public affairs as prescribed by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ). You are expected to attend intensive shorthand tuition throughout the first year.

    The course provides you with an understanding of the media, including an insight into legal and ethical issues facing the industry. You will gain strong practical journalist skills such as reporting, feature writing, subbing, interviewing and researching stories. Additionally you will study design, layout and editorial production (including desk-top publishing and web design) and photojournalism. You will also gain training in television and radio production, as well as online journalism.

    Underpinning this development of a marketable practical base, the course imparts research and analytical skills. You will gain an appreciation of the social, economic and political roles of the contemporary media and the place of the journalist in today's society. The course has strong links with the media and journalism practitioner input to the curriculum includes guest speakers, visits to local broadcasting organisations and live client projects; resulting in a strong portfolio of work.

    The 6 week placement provides you with an invaluable opportunity to put your skills and knowledge to the test in an appropriate journalism and media-based environment, as well as form excellent links with potential future employers.

    The course is taught at the Aberdeen Business School, situated on our beautiful parkland Garthdee Campus. The modern purpose built School encompasses state-of-the-art lecture theatres, teaching labs, IT facilities, media centre and TV studio. The School's library houses comprehensive collections of journals, case studies and management reports as well as electronic resources

    The department has extensive links with the media industries, and graduates will find careers in print, broadcast and online journalism. Opportunities for employment also exist in fields such as public relations and media management.
