  • Course Structure:

Engineering is one of the most interesting and satisfying careers, and engineers are in high demand around the world. Our technological society relies completely on engineering and the constant stream of new solutions that are developed by engineers. An engineering degree is intellectually challenging and requires a good grasp of mathematics and physics; as a qualified engineer you will be expected to offer a wide range of skills and to be adaptable to the needs of your clients. No two engineers are the same.

Mechanical engineering is a wide ranging subject covering structures and machines ranging from artificial hip joints to oil rigs. Mechanical engineers are involved in many industries: energy, environment, aerospace, marine and agriculture, to name but a few.

In the first stages of the BEng and MEng courses you will undertake a broad selection of modules which lay the foundations for further study, including basic Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. You will then progress to learn more Mechanical Engineering subjects such as thermofluids, dynamics, mechanics, materials, design and manufacture. In the later stages of the course you will have the choice of studying more in-depth Mechanical Engineering subjects or combining Mechanical Engineering with modules in Offshore Engineering or Electrical Engineering.

Offshore Engineering is a particular speciality of The Robert Gordon University and focuses on the study of oil and gas exploration and recovery, platform design, subsea pipelines and equipment, down-hole instrumentation and energy transformation.

  • Career Opportunities:

As the BEng (Hons)/MEng degree satisfies the full academic requirements for Chartered Engineer status, graduates have a wide variety of career options open to them. Our graduates are highly sought after and many of them gain employment in the global oil and gas engineering sector. However, opportunities also exist in many other areas of mechanical engineering such as aerospace, transport, marine technology, health and bioengineering.

  • Other Info:

Progression from BEng to MEng is for students who have shown above average ability during the first and second year of their studies. All these courses have a
common first semester of study. Applicants may either specify courses suited to specific interests or a group code for Engineering (UCAS H100), indicating no decision yet on eventual specialisation.
