  • Course Structure:

    The full-time* pre-registration nursing programme is 3 years in length leading to an academic award and qualification as a Registered Nurse in one of the following fields of practice:

    • Mental Health Nursing
    • Children's Nursing
    • Adult Nursing

    The required programme hours are divided equally between theory (university) and practice (placement) learning. A mix of teaching, learning and assessment methods are used to facilitate students to become confident, independent and resourceful learners and nurses.

    Stage 1 of the programme is a common foundation programme and prepares students to meet the requirements for entry into their selected field of practice. Subjects studied in university and in practice settings are designed to provide students with an understanding of theory fundamental to nursing practice. These include clinical nursing skills, interpersonal skills, service user and carer perspectives, human sciences, professional, ethical and legal issues and the nature of health care.

    Stages 2 and 3 are where students focus upon their selected field of practice. Subjects studied reflect contemporary evidence-based practice, research and theoretical perspectives in the field. These include the nature of caring and therapeutic skills, the scientific underpinning of nursing practice in the field and working within a multi-professional context where service users and carers are central to service delivery. Students are supported to develop and embed in their practice the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are needed to deliver high quality care within forward looking health care services.
       
    Stage 3 in particular prepares students for the transition from student to newly qualified nurse.

  • Placement:

    50% of the pre-registration nursing programme is based within clinical practice.

    Practice placements vary in type and nature, according to the selected field of practice, and are located throughout Grampian, Orkney and Shetland.
    Placements will include non-NHS health care settings as well as those in NHS and community sectors.

    Nursing in all fields offers a career which is exciting, rewarding and flexible, and provides many opportunities for career development.   

    Mental Health nurses deliver values-based, recovery-focussed mental health care which has caring and therapeutic relationships with service users, their families and carers as its hallmark. Partnership working with service users, other health care professionals and a wide range of support agencies is crucial to ensuring that service users, who may be children, adolescents or adults of all ages, have their unique and diverse needs met.

    Mental health nurses fulfil their roles in a variety of settings, for example, schools, health centres, prisons, people’s own homes, out-patient clinics, day hospitals and hospitals promoting mental health as well as responding to mental ill-health. Mental health nurses work with individuals, carers and families where mental health problems and disorders such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, eating disorders, dementia and substance misuse impact on mental and physical well-being and may lead to additional problems such as self-harm. Whilst mental health nurses most often work as part of a multi-professional team many also work as independent practitioners delivering a range of general and specialist therapeutic interventions.

    Children’s nurses have a key role in promoting the health and well being of children and young people. They also provide care for children, young people and their carers and families whose needs can be physical, educational, emotional, social and psychological in nature. Children’s nursing is becoming much more community based and involves working in partnership with parents and carers as well as a range of other professionals and service providers.

    Children’s nurses give direct care to ill babies and young people who experience acute injury, they care for and support children with complex health issues or disabilities, as well as support distressed families and carers. The challenges are varied with family-centred care being a core element of practice. Children’s nursing takes place in hospitals, day centres, child health clinics, schools and in children’s own homes.
       
    Adult Nurses work with older and younger adults with diverse health conditions and health needs. The skilful use of interpersonal and clinical skills enables adult nurses to manage complex situations in practice. Nurses work at the centre of the multi-professional team alongside healthcare assistants, doctors, physiotherapists, social workers and others.

    Adult nurses have close contact with patients, families and significant others as part of the caring, therapeutic relationship. Whether working in hospital or community settings, adult nurses work in partnership with the patient. Career opportunities are diverse and include: medical and surgical, intensive care, elderly care, theatre and recovery, accident and emergency, occupational health, public health, community, palliative care, and many other specialities.

    The pre-registration nursing programme is delivered at RGU’s purpose-built Faculty of Health and Social Care building, situated on our beautiful parkland Garthdee campus. A state-of-the-art clinical skills centre is utilised to facilitate students' to develop and consolidate a range of generic and field specific nursing skills.

    Wendy worked as an auxiliary nurse for eight years before starting her degree as she didn't have the qualifications needed. She said, 'While I was working as an auxiliary nurse at ARI, I achieved my SVQ in care level 3 with the help and support of my mentor staff nurse Rebecca Duncan, and the SVQ coordinators Katrina Whittingham and Lynn Sutherland.
