- Course Structure:
Engineering is one of the most interesting and satisfying careers, and engineers are in high demand around the world. Our technological society relies completely on engineering and the constant stream of new solutions that are developed by engineers. An engineering degree is intellectually challenging and requires a good grasp of mathematics and physics; as a qualified engineer you will be expected to offer a wide range of skills and to be adaptable to the needs of your clients. No two engineers are the same.
Mechanical engineering is a wide ranging subject covering structures and machines ranging from artificial hip joints to oil rigs. Mechanical engineers are involved in many industries: energy, environment, aerospace, marine and agriculture, to name but a few.
In the first stages of the BEng and MEng courses you will undertake a broad selection of modules which lay the foundations for further study, including basic Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. You will then progress to learn more Mechanical Engineering subjects such as thermofluids, dynamics, mechanics, materials, design and manufacture. In the later stages of the course you will have the choice of studying more in-depth Mechanical Engineering subjects or combining Mechanical Engineering with modules in Offshore Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
Offshore Engineering is a particular speciality of The Robert Gordon University and focuses on the study of oil and gas exploration and recovery, platform design, subsea pipelines and equipment, down-hole instrumentation and energy transformation.
This course is offered on a full-time basis at years 3 and 4 only and is specifically designed for entrants with an HND in the appropriate discipline. It is also offered on a part-time evening class basis at years 2 and 3 only and is specifically designed for entrants with an HNC or HND in the appropriate discipline.
- Career Opportunities:
Our graduates are much sought after by employers and are successful at securing employment and professional responsibility in a wide variety of roles. Mechanical Engineering graduates go on to work in oil and gas engineering, power generation and utilisation, marine technology, health and bioengineering, aerospace and transport.
