Kevin Bowie
// Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship // BA (Hons) Quantity Surveying

Kevin Bowie

Kevin decided not to stay on at school and left at 16 to take up an apprenticeship as a carpenter and joiner. As part of his apprenticeship Kevin attended ABERDEEN COLLEGE where his talents shone and he received many awards and trophies including The James Birnie Award for Craft Excellence, the Wrights and Coopers William Daniel Award and the National APSE House and Building Services Apprentice of the Year.

It was during his time at college that it was suggested to Kevin that he could go further with his education and attend RGU for four years to train as a quantity surveyor.

He said, 'When I left school I never thought I'd go to University but bit by bit, as I did well at college, I realised that I was capable of more. After learning about the construction industry and the various types of building contracts the course really appealed to me.

Kevin's HNC and work experience allowed him entry into first year of the course without highers. He continues, 'Initially the course was a culture shock returning to full time education but once I settled in I thoroughly enjoyed the course; it was exactly what I thought it would be.'

Kevin carried out his placement at MTM construction, where he has now secured a permanent position as a quantity surveyor. He continues, 'The placement really shows you how the course links into the workplace and gives you some experience and a flavour of the work itself.'

Kevin concludes, 'When I left school I never imagined I'd go to University but I have a passion for the construction industry and am lucky enough to love what I do. I'm really proud to be graduating today, especially to have achieved a First!'
