Fifth Ring CREATE links with young designers

Fifth Ring Integrated Corporate Communications has given a team of ABERDEEN COLLEGE's young designers the opportunity to learn more about the creative industry after winning a unique four-week design project.

As part of a well established and ongoing relationship with the college, Fifth Ring briefed 60 second year HND Visual Communication students with a new healthy eating initiative for north-east secondary schools, based on a successful campaign previously executed by Fifth Ring's design team.

The students, divided into teams of six, were asked to develop a brand name and logo, a compelling strapline and present the campaign using three different mediums, such as posters, press advertising and a website.

The winning team presented the Eat Smart - See the Difference campaign, influencing healthy eating through a mock up comic book featuring cartoon superheroes.

Fifth Ring's creative director, Stewart Fallowfield, said: "It is great to provide students with an overview of the industry through a brief based on a real campaign, previously executed by us. We have taken a proactive approach in getting involved with the college over the years, as it is important for us to create links with tomorrow's designers in this competitive market."

The winning students will spend half a day in coming weeks with Fifth Ring's design team expanding their knowledge, learning aspects of the job and experiencing the operation at Fifth Ring.

Innes Taylor, curriculum leader Visual Communication at ABERDEEN COLLEGE said: "We really appreciate the time Fifth Ring has put into the project, which has been a tremendous experience for the students. This is the biggest client initiated project we have ever undertaken in Visual Communication. The students logged their progress through a weekly blog giving us a real insight into how they were managing the project. The standard of work produced was high across all 10 groups, but the winning team just had the edge and now their work is ready to go into production."

A member of the winning team, student Bryan Sinclair, said: "It was fantastic to receive first-hand experience from the team at Fifth Ring. They offered us invaluable advice and feedback, reflecting the theory and practical work we receive at college. I am looking forward to visiting Fifth Ring, which will provide us with an insight into the 'real world.'"

The design project has further enhanced Fifth Ring's ongoing relationship with ABERDEEN COLLEGE having previously worked with students on all areas of Fifth Ring's business, including advertising, brand and strategy development, design, digital media and marketing and public relations.
